Description

Cut my life into pieces,
This is my last resort
Suffocation,
No breathing,
Don't give a fuck if I cut my arm bleeding

This is my last resort

Cut my life into pieces
I've reached my last resort,
Suffocation,
No breathing
Don't give a fuck if I cut my arm bleeding
Do you even care if I die bleeding?
Would it be wrong?
Would it be right?
If I took my life tonight?
Chances are that I might
Mutilation out of sight,
And I'm contemplating suicide

'Cause I'm losing my sight,
Losing my mind,
Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine
Losing my sight,
Losing my mind,
Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine

I never realized I was spread too thin,
Till it was too late,
And I was empty within,
Hungry,
Feeding on chaos,
And living in sin
Downward spiral, where do I begin?
It all started when I lost my mother,
No love for myself,
And no love for another
Searching to find a love up on a higher level
Finding nothing but questions and devils

'Cause I'm losing my sight,
Losing my mind,
Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine
Losing my sight,
Losing my mind,
Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine
Nothing's alright,
Nothing is fine,
I'm running and I'm crying
I'm crying
I'm crying
I'm crying
I'm crying

I can't go on living this way

Cut my life into pieces,
This is my last resort,
Suffocation,
No breathing,
Don't give a fuck if I cut my arm bleeding
Would it be wrong?
Would it be right?
If I took my life tonight,
Chances are that I might
Mutilation out of sight,
And I'm contemplating suicide

'Cause I'm losing my sight,
Losing my mind,
Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine
Losing my sight,
Losing my mind,
Wish somebody would tell me I'm fine
Nothing's alright,
Nothing is fine,
I'm running and I'm crying

I can't go on living this way

Can't go on
Living this way
Nothing's alright

Hey guys! Hoo, I have a lot to say here. Firstly, big kudos and respect to @adi.shankar-wins, the director of the upcoming Devil May Cry Netflix series. His music choices and vision for the show are so on point, man. He's really throwing us back to the early 2000s, even that pre-9/11 era. I remember everything from back then!

Adi really nailed the atmosphere and vibe already, based on these songs alone. He understands the assignment, and I can tell he did his homework. Make no mistake, Last Resort wasn't some random song picked for the sake of being edgy, or because it came from that time era. Listen carefully to the lyrics. They perfectly correlate with Dante!

Especially when you keep in mind Dante's synopsis in the DMC3 manga.
Specifically these parts: "A hedonistic free spirit. Neither human nor demon, his heart is heavy with self-loathing. He often embarks in reckless and outlandish behavior. He is either extremely selfless or dangerously suicidal." That's really sad. Since Last Resort touches upon the topic of suicide, it matches that description well. I don't think it's a theory anymore that Dante had depression because we've seen it exhibited in DMC2 and the anime.

Vergil wasn't the only one who hated himself for being unable to protect their mother Eva. Dante hated himself too, and with some of the lyrics mentioning, "It all started when I lost my mother, no love for myself", we can see how it relates to Dante. Even though we don't see Dante actively trying to kill himself in the games, the reckless behavior he engages in by participating in activities that would kill a normal human (Demon hunting, excessive drinking and his death defying stunts), just show he's the ultimate thrill seeker. He knows he can't die, which bleeds into his carefree demeanor. All the dangerous things he does is to feel something and put himself in harm's way and feeling like it was his fault for Eva's death.

He feels guilty and thinks the only way he can give back to the world is dangerously putting his life on the line (Even though he's nearly impossible to kill anyways). To disregard this and say, "Where was this told in the games?" is counterproductive and encourages misunderstanding the character. Things don't need to be spoon fed, plus it's important to pay attention to subtleties and not disregard complementary media. DMC2, the DMC3 manga and DMC anime are canon to Dante's character and are solid proof for him being one of the best representations of depression in media.

Look at Dante from beyond a surface level. Think about why he is the way he is. All of his goofiness in DMC3-5 is completely earned and came from a lifetime of hardened experiences and trauma. Along with Dante learning to make peace with his past and accepting himself, despite his emotional turmoil. The games are how he presents himself to the world and the anime and books are his thoughts and private moments. Dante truly is the perfect archetype of a character that's cheerful and whimsical with a lot of tragedy behind that exterior.
