Born into slavery in 1822, Harriet Tubman escaped and devoted her life to freeing others. Through the Underground Railroad, she led more than 70 slaves to freedom, completing at least 13 missions. During the Civil War, Tubman served as a scout and nurse for the Union Army, and in 1863 she took part in a raid that freed over 700 people. Her courage and determination made her a symbol of the fight for freedom, earning her the nickname "Moses."
