🤓Did you know? Here’s some more fun facts:
In the song 《情字诀 Recipe For Love/ Secrets of Love》 :
• “我一袭青衫可抵千叠浪” the word “青衫” in the literal translation means “green shirt”. But for historical and/or literary poetic reference, this word has several interpretations.
“青衫 qīng shān” refers to students and scholars; in Peking Opera, it can also mean 正旦Zhengdan (main female role); it can also generally mean an official in a humble position or the clothing of humble people (notice the underlying message) and “青衫” can also refer to immortals. Kinda makes you want to own a few “青衫” yourself, huh?
• “一蓑烟雨”: The word “蓑 suō” refers to a straw raincoat that is used to protect against the wind and rain. This line is also quite interesting. Did you notice its similarity to another verse by a famous Song poet? “一蓑烟雨任平生” originated in the Song Dynasty by the popular Chinese poet and artist 苏轼 Su Shi who wrote this famous verse when he was relegated to Huangzhou. The underlying meaning works well relative to the song 《情字诀》 in explaining that no matter what storms you face in life, you can handle it head on.
In the song 《问天下 Asking The World》 :
• “扶摇九万里的那份冷傲” has a rather interesting association with a famous Tang Dynasty poet. Can you guess the origin? The word “扶摇” is a Chinese word that was used by the famous poet 李白 Li Bai. If you’re familiar with Chinese poetry, you definitely heard of this talented artist. Besides being one of the greatest poets from the Tang Dynasty, 李白 Li Bai was also a prominent figure who left a strong mark in Chinese history. The verse in “扶摇九万里” is likely in reference to 李白 Li Bai’s famous poem 《上李邕》. The word “扶摇” literally means a violent whirlwind resulting in rapid ascension. The song’s usage of this term is probably referencing that one day the winds will rise and using its strong gale, you can transverse beyond the mighty heavens. Everyone has an opportunity to rise beyond their current position and rise to the occasion. Don’t be beaten down because one day, you can turn the table in your favor.
• “ 金乌照” is probably referencing the sun. In Chinese mythology and culture, 金乌 or 三足乌 represents the sun and is often colored red instead of black, contrary to the common color of crows. What’s interesting about the “Golden Crow” is its cultural presence in other Asian countries such as Japan and Korea. In Japan, this great bird (八咫烏 Yatagarasu) represents the will of the Heavens and acts as a guide. In Korea, it is known as 삼족오 Samjoko and symbolizes the sun and great power. Cool bird!
