Progressive house is a kind of house music. It originated in the early 1990s in the UK. This house style is designed to express musical progression through melodies and bass lines.
The term "progressive house" was first used in 1992 by the editor-in-chief of the English magazine Mixmag, Dom Phillips (Eng. Dom Phillips). This term denoted the music played by the English DJ Sasha (English Sasha) — American house with an admixture of Italian music. In the same category were the very first tracks recorded in the progressive house style, such as Gat Decor "Passion", Leftfield "Not forgotten" and "Song of life", React 2 Rhythm "Intoxication". In addition, such labels as Guerilla, Limbo, Stress and Jackpot began to specialize in this music. Everything that these labels published in the mid-90s can be considered classic progressive house.
Relatively speaking, progressive house has already experienced two bursts of popularity. The first one was in the mid-90s, when interesting dance music sounded in English clubs like "Drum club" and "Renaissance", and one of the most notable DJs at that time was the same Sasha. Gradually, progressive house became more popular, easier, clearer and more accessible to the average layman. Progressive trance emerged from that form of progressive house, where preference was given to lyrics, melodies with the obvious simplicity of this music. The second wave of popularity arose in the early noughties, when progressive house again became gloomy music, where rhythm and sound occupied the main place. The main person on this stage is John Digweed and his label Bedrock records.
To understand what progressive house is, it's best to listen to Sasha & John Digweed's "Renaissance: the mix collection", which was released in 1994 and sold 100,000 copies. In 2004, this collection was reissued. You can also listen to any disc from the "Global Underground" or "Balance" series or the products of Bedrock records label.
