Chen Yaoxing was tasked to prepare "Galloping War Horses" for the Second Artillery Art Troupe, as part of the Chinese People's Liberation Army's fourth army-wide Art and Music Festival. In 1976, during cavalry training in Inner Mongolia, Chen was deeply touched by the courageous spirit and daring showed by fellow soldiers. He was inspired to create "Galloping War Horses", creating the song as a solo for the 二胡 (erhu) to show the enthusiasm of the frontier soldiers
